PHD THROUGH THE NYU-SHANGHAI TRACK
The Shanghai-PhD track is a joint program constructed by NYU-Shanghai and NYU-New York. Students participating in this track will study for their course work in New York, while completing their research at NYU-Shanghai. At the completion of their studies, students will be conferred a PhD by NYU-New York.
Students who apply to this track are expected to have a deep interest in work in China and/or in work with professors at NYU-Shanghai. Linguistic proficiency is recommended, but not required for application.
PROGRAM OF STUDY
During the fall and spring semesters of their first full academic year in the program, students will be located in New York, completing coursework alongside their New York-track classmates, but will continue to stay in close contact with Shanghai faculty. In the summer after their first full academic year, as well as in the summer after their second year, students are to return to Shanghai for research.
After the summer following their first year, it is anticipated that students will return to New York for additional coursework and to pass their comprehensive exams and Research and Writing course. The amount of additional time in New York may vary depending on each student’s course-study plan. As a general principle, it is expected that students will be in New York for no longer than is academically justifiable—the first two and a half academic years.
After their residency in New York, students will relocate permanently to Shanghai for the remainder of their PhD careers under the supervision of their NYU Shanghai PhD advisor. While the dissertation of students in the Shanghai track will be chaired by faculty at NYU-Shanghai, students may have NYU-New York faculty as part of their dissertation committee.
