For Students Interested in PhD Programs:
The NYU MA program in Applied Quantitative Research (AQR) is the only quantitatively-oriented MA program housed in a department of sociology. It has helped many of its graduates be more competitive when applying to Ph.D. programs in sociology. It does so by providing students with the sorts of skills, a completed and concrete research project in the form of the MA thesis, and letters of recommendation from highly-regarded NYU faculty that have helped many AQR graduates be more attractive than other Ph.D. applicants. To date, AQR graduates have succeeded in getting into sociology Ph.D. programs that include those at NYU, Princeton, Wisconsin, UCLA, Penn State, UC Davis, CUNY, Boston University, and Emory.
FOR STUDENTS SEEKING JOBS:
The AQR program provides graduates with a set of skills that many find extremely valuable when seeking positions in the for- and non-profit sectors of the job market. AQR graduates gain proficiency in analyzing complex data using state-of-the art statistical models and research designs as they conduct the independent research that culminates in their MA thesis. This provides prospective employers with concrete evidence of the sort of skills that are often in high demand but short supply. Jobs that AQR students have taken after completing their AQR MA include positions at Google, Amazon, Nielsen, eBay, Deutsche Bank, MIT Media Lab, the NYU Medical Center, New York Public Radio, and a variety of research and data analysis positions at Princeton, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and NYU Shanghai.
