SAME AS HIST-UA 569.

This course will cover the development of Soviet and Russian cinema from the 1960s to the disintegration of the Soviet Union and formation of post-Soviet cinema culture. The newest trends will also be covered. It will be centered on historical approaches, which will help to establish a meaningful relationship between the developments in film and changing cultural, social, and political contexts. Artists discussed will include Tarkovsky, Paradzhanov, Iosseliani, Shepit'ko, Sokurov, Muratova, German, Balabanov. All readings are in English.
