Defining Russia

An introduction to the study of Russian culture at the graduate level, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary content and approaches. Each weekly segment explores a different problem through a combination of original sources and secondary texts. Faculty members who work on Russian topics in a variety of disciplines—including literature, history, politics, anthropology, and music, among others—conduct a series of guest seminars with the goal of providing an overview of important issues in Russian studies today. While not intended to be a complete survey of Russian history or literature, the course aims to introduce the main methods and chief debates of current scholarship in the field.
