09:30 INTRODUCTION AND WELCOMING REMARKS
Stefanos Geroulanos and Zvi Ben-Dor Benite (NYU)
Session I
10:00 – 12:30 Stefanos Geroulanos, Chair
CRISIS AS CONCEPT
We jumpstart the discussion with what might be playfully called “philologies of crisis”: inquiring into the nature of the word ‘crisis,’ traditions of its understanding, reaches of its use, how it clashes with arguments of continuity. We begin to think about crisis’s capacity to generate meaning and even to produce economies of its own.
10:00 – 11:00 Brief opening comments
(Zvi Ben-Dor Benite, Adam Tooze, Katrina Forrester, Julia Ng)
11:00 - 12:00 Discussion
12:15 Lunch at hotel
Free afternoon until:
Session II
16:30 – 19:00 Molly Nolan, Chair
CENTURY OF CRISIS
Moving outward from particular cultural invocations of ‘crisis’—ranging from theological and anthropological to sexual and cultural-political matters—we consider ‘crisis’ as an alphabet of history.
16:30 – 18:00 Brief opening comments
(Janet Roitman, Mark Greif, Dagmar Herzog, Udi Greenberg, Lukas Engelmann)
18:00 – 19:00 Discussion
19:00 Drinks followed by dinner at hotel
Friday, April 15th
Session III
10:00 – 12:00 Adam Tooze, Chair
NETWORKS AND IDEOLOGIES
Looking into specific European cases of crises in ideology and in political and legal systems, we will also contemplate crisis-response models in recent history. What is the place of ‘response’ in the construction of ‘crisis’? What is the ideological value of crisis and to what degree is this value involved in creating the very experience and meaningfulness of crisis?
10:00 – 11:00 Brief opening comments
(Philippa Hetherington, Małgorzata Mazurek, Molly Nolan, Andrii Portnov)
11:00 – 12:00 Discussion
12:15 Lunch at hotel
Free afternoon until
19:00 Drinks at hotel
19:30 Dinner at the Landgasthof Ruedihaus
Saturday, April 16th
Session IV
10.00 – 12:00 Dagmar Herzog, Chair
EPISTEMOLOGIES GROUNDED IN CRISIS
Knowledge based on proclamations and negotiations of crisis remains one of the principal ways of re-defining crisis itself. In this last set of presentations, we ask about the production of knowledge in the wake of different economic, political, and cultural crises, returning to the concept of an economy of crisis to ask about its meaning and consequences.
10:00 – 11:00 Brief opening comments
(Alexander Arnold, Larissa Buchholz, Grey Anderson, Stefanos Geroulanos)
11:00 – 12:00 Discussion
12:15 Lunch at hotel
