The Institute for International Law and Justice along with the Remarque Institute will be co-sponsoring a hybrid lunch event, featuring Martti Koskenniemi from University of Helsinki and NYU School of Law.
The talk will focus on the legal vocabularies that framed European power as it was exercised outside the domestic realm from 1300 to the mid-19th century. Focusing on the period “before” international law, Koskenniemi will argue that what transpires from an analysis of various legal vernaculars is that, in each of them, sovereignty and property combined themselves in a contextually specific fashion. They have been the yin and yang of European power both within Europe and beyond.
