Join NYU’s Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies for a conversation with the editors of New Lines Magazine on redefining Middle East coverage.
Hassan Hassan is the Founder and Editor in Chief of New Lines Magazine, with past experience as a reporter and deputy editor for The National in the UAE. Hassan is a graduate of Damascus University with a degree in English Literature and of the University of Nottingham with a master’s in international relations. His influential book “ISIS: the Army of Terror” is highly regarded for its contribution to the field of politics and the study of terrorism. Hassan has an extensive history of working in fields of policy and journalism for many institutes and publications, such as the Atlantic magazine, Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, and George Washington University.
Rasha Elass is the Editorial Director of New Lines Magazine with a decorated past in reporting on the Middle East. Her work has encompassed finance, global investigative stories, business, religion, culture, and reporting on many regions and topics in the Middle East, most notably from rebel-held areas in Syria. Elass holds a master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and had her works featured in The Los Angeles Times, NPR, Reuters, and Forbes.
Ola Salem graduated with a major in Journalism and a minor in Film from the UAE University and further pursued a master’s degree in Writing from New York University. Salem has previously worked as a reporter for the National newspaper in Abu Dhabi and as a freelance producer for Al Jazeera English before contributing to the building of the New Lines Magazine. Aside from conceptualizing the New Lines Magazine on different platforms as a managing editor, Salem’s work has covered political news, education and labor and has been featured on the Washington Post, the New York Post, The Guardian, and The National among others.
Kareem Shaheen is a graduate of King’s College London with a master’s in War Studies and currently serves as Middle East and Newsletter Editor at New Lines Magazine. Shaheen has previously worked as a correspondent for the Guardian and as a reporter for the Daily Star and the National. Shaheen was nominated for the Frontline Club print journalism award for his coverage of the 2017 chemical attacks on Khan Sheikhoun. Shaheen’s work has encompassed many areas in the region and has contributed to the work of developing independent Arab media outlets.
Mohamad Bazzi is Director of the Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies and an associate professor of journalism at New York University. From 2019 to 2021, he was associate director of NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. From 2009 to 2013, he served as an adjunct senior fellow for Middle East studies at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), providing regional expertise and analysis. He was also the 2008 Edward R. Murrow Press Fellow at CFR. Before joining the NYU faculty, Bazzi was the Middle East bureau chief at Newsday from 2003 to 2008, where he established bureaus in Baghdad and Beirut. He was the lead writer on the Iraq war and its aftermath.
