In her forthcoming book, City of Refugees, Susan Hartman—a New York Times journalist who teaches at NYU SPS and Yale—follows three remarkable refugees for five years: Sadia, a rebellious Somali Bantu teenage girl; Mersiha, a Bosnian who runs a bakery in her basement; and Ali, an Iraqi translator, haunted by war. In this talk, Hartman will discuss how a long-time influx of refugees has transformed the once forlorn city of Utica, NY.
Susan Hartman is an Adjunct Associate Professor within NYU's Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA) and a Lecturer in English at Yale University. She has written cover stories and profiles for The New York Times, Newsday, and The Christian Science Monitor, often following her subjects for months. She is the author of two books of poetry, Dumb Show and El Abogado, and a chapbook, Satyr.
