The Business of Translation:
Join us for this Professional Development Workshop to discuss the ins and outs of writing, editing, and publishing translated works. Our guests include David Larsen, a professor of Classical Arabic Literature and a professional translator, and Chip Rossetti, an editor at NYU Press who has worked extensively on the Library of Arabic Literature series. Topics of interest will include how to select and pitch translations to publications, how to get started in a career as a translator or an editor, and what sorts of things students interested in these career paths can do to prepare for them in their coursework.
David Larsen is a translator of Classical Arabic literature and a professor of Liberal Studies at NYU. His graduate studies in Comparative Literature ran parallel to years of activity in the San Francisco Bay Area’s experimental poetry community, culminating in a verse collection
The Thorn (Cambridge, MA: Faux Press, 2005) and two and a half years as curator of the New Yipes video and poetry series. During the 2011 uprising in Egypt he was a Fulbright Scholar based in Cairo. David Larsen has taught at U. C. Berkeley, Yale and Ohio State, and is currently a Clinical Professor of Liberal Studies at NYU.
Chip Rossetti is the managing editor of the Library of Arabic Literature translation series at NYU Press. He is a translator of contemporary Arabic fiction.
