Dr. Hartshorn will discuss his new book Labor Politics in North Africa: After the Uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia from Cambridge University Press. He will review the role of workers in the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, and how labor organizations pushed for change, won concessions, and fought amongst themselves. The discussion will be followed by a question and answer session with Dr. Hartshorn

Ian M. Hartshorn received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in political science and his BA from Bucknell University in religion and Middle East studies. His research focuses on the politics of labor both internationally and domestically, with a focus on the recent transitions in the Arab Middle East. He has ongoing research projects looking at the strategic decisions made by trade unionists, the role of global labor in affecting transitions to and from authoritarianism, and the process of refugee resettlement in the United States. He is former co-chair of the Labor Politics section of the American Political Science Association and his work has been featured in academic journals such as Political Research Quarterly, Terrorism and Political Violence, Economic and Industrial Democracy and in the Washington Post's MonkeyCage and Jadaliyya.
Discussant:
Benoit Challand is Associate Professor of Sociology at the New School for Social Research, NYC. His research focus on civil society in Palestine and foreign assistance in the Middle East, Marxist theory, and European identity. He has taught at the Scuola Normale Superiore (Florence), NYU, and the University of Fribourg (CH). He holds a MA in Near East Studies from SOAS (London, 2000) and a PhD from the European University Institute (Florence, 2005). He is currently finishing a book on informal politics and decentralization in Tunisia and Yemen.
