Professional Development Workshop: Humanities Beyond the Academy with Carly Goodman

This workshop with Carly Goodman will introduce MA and Ph.D. students to some of the important tools, experiences, and opportunities for preparing for a career outside the academy. Attendees will learn about a few important fellowship and job training opportunities, nuts and bolts of applying for jobs in these areas, and what sorts of questions to consider during their academic training in preparation for this kind of career. This workshop is open to any NYU graduate students.

Carly Goodman is a historian of immigration and American foreign relations. She is a

Mellon/American Council of Learned Societies Public Fellow and the communications analyst at American Friends Service Committee. She earned her Ph.D. in history from Temple University in 2016. Her dissertation Global Game of Chance: The U.S. Diversity Visa Lottery, Transnational Migration, and Cultural Diplomacy in Africa, 1990-2016 was awarded Honorable Mention by

the Oxford University Press USA Dissertation Prize in International History 2018. She was previously awarded the Marilyn Blatt Young Dissertation Completion Fellowship by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations.

The Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program places recent humanities PhDs in staff positions at partnering agencies. At AFSC, a 101-year old peace and social justice organization that works across the U.S. and internationally, Goodman performs qualitative research and analyzes existing research to improve the organization’s messaging and audience engagement on an array of policy and social justice issues. Prior to graduate school she worked at Human Rights First on a campaign to reform U.S. detention and interrogation policies in the war on terror and to close Guantanamo.
