New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service (NYU Wagner), in partnership with John Radcliffe Studio and the Hagop Kervokian Center for Near Eastern Studies at NYU, is pleased to announce the opening of Foreigner, the Fall 2017 exhibition at the Gallery Space at Wagner. Curated by Frankie Crescioni-Santoni and Thomas Saxby, the exhibit features images and a short film by photographer and filmmaker Daniel Castro Garcia. It is presented in conjunction with the panel discussion Foreigner: Photoactivism, Representation, and the Refugee Crises.
The selected works are from John Radcliffe Studio’s ongoing multimedia project documenting the experiences of refugees and migrants from the Middle East and North Africa arriving in Europe. The series originated in response to the sensationalist and violence-infused coverage of these communities by the European media. Castro Garcia's imagery offers a poignant and powerful counter-narrative to those inflammatory representations and provided the source material to the award-winning photo book Foreigner: Migration into Europe 2015–2016.
The accompanying panel discussion brings together a roster of experts in the fields of arts & media, economics, international affairs, and public policy. Confirmed speakers joining Castro Garcia include: Manjula Luthria, Senior Economist, World Bank; Paul Moakley, Deputy Photo Editor, Time Magazine; and Meredith Whitefield, Manager of Photography, International Rescue Committee. Natasha Iskander, Associate Professor of Public Policy at NYU Wagner, will moderate. The program will take place on Monday, October 23, starting with the panel discussion and Q&A session from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The gallery and post-panel reception will immediately follow from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. The event is open to the public via RSVP at wagner.nyu.edu/events. Kindly RSVP by Friday, October 20.
