Gender is a key element in the plans of Israel’s current government to reshape the country. Unleashing a fundamentalist brand of Judaism that stands in stark contrast to Israel’s egalitarian ethos, law, and longstanding policy, the 2023 regime is hostile to women and LGBTQ+. Prof. Tirosh will share fieldnotes from many months of protest and resistance, offering context and insights on why and how gender has become both the means and the end in the government’s agenda. The talk will analyze the forces promoting a patriarchal vision for Israel, whereby men and women are to be segregated physically and symbolically.
Dr. Yofi Tirosh is a feminist legal scholar and a nationally recognized award-winning human rights activist. Tirosh is an Associate Professor and Vice Dean at the Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law, former Dean of the Sapir Academic College School of Law, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. An expert in antidiscrimination law and in law and culture, her recent work focuses on the tension between gender equality and religion. Before writing her doctorate at the University of Michigan Law School, she received her LL.B. from the Hebrew University and clerked at Israel’s Supreme Court.
