L’imaginaire de l’asile, du refuge, du sanctuaire de l’accueil fait aux persécutés, aux souffrants, de l’hospitalité offerte à l’étranger, traverse la pensée du long XVIIIe siècle, de la révocation de l’Édit de Nantes jusqu’à la fin de la Révolution. Mais c’est souvent sous le signe de la perte que cet imaginaire se déploie, comme si les pratiques d’accueil, les espaces protégés, devaient désormais appartenir au passé ou aux marges. Dans l’article Refuge de l’Encyclopédie, qui définit le concept comme « un sanctuaire ou asile, où un homme qu’on persécute cherche sa sûreté », Diderot explique ainsi la disparition des églises où l’accueil était offert inconditionnellement comme l’effet d’une souveraineté politique refusant de tolérer la présence d’un espace où son pouvoir rencontrerait sa limite. « Charlemagne avait donné aux asiles une première atteinte en 779, par la défense qu’il fit, qu’on portât à manger aux criminels qui se retireraient dans les églises. Nos rois ont achevé ce que Charlemagne avait commencé » : Il semblerait donc que le refuge, au XVIIIe siècle, ne puisse qu’être interstitiel, phénomène mineur, de l’ordre d’une survivance. Du Cleveland de Prévost aux récits d’émigration, de la petite société rousseauiste à la Chaumière indienne d’un Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, le roman est ainsi plein de ces lieux où l’on n’est que provisoirement et conditionnellement soustrait à une menace, à l’empire d’un pouvoir. L’objet de ce colloque sera d’explorer à travers une multiplicité de points de vue – politique, littéraire, historique, architectural, géographique, etc. – les pensées de l’asile et du refuge au XVIIIe siècle.
Reflections on the nature of asylums, refuges, and sanctuaries, evocations of shelter being offered to the persecuted and the suffering, and of hospitality given to strangers, abound in the long eighteenth century, from the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes to the end of the French Revolution. Yet, such practices and spaces are often described as having been lost, as if hospitality already belonged to the past, or the margins. In the article “Refuge” he wrote for the Encyclopédie, Diderot, after defining the concept as “a sanctuary or asylum, where a persecuted man finds safety,” thus explained the disappearance of the churches that offered unconditional hospitality as a result of the rise of a new political sovereignty no longer tolerant of spaces situated at the limits of its power: “Charlemagne had dealt a first blow to asylums in 779, by prohibiting people to bring food to criminals that had taken shelter in churches. Our kings have finished what Charlemagne had started.” By the eighteenth century, refuges, it would seem, had become interstitial spaces, minor occurrences, relics. From Prevost’s Cleveland to emigration narratives, from Rousseau’s small communities to Bernardin the Saint-Pierre’s Indian Cottage, the novel is full of such places where one only temporarily and conditionally escapes a threat, or the reach of a power. The goal of this conference will be to explore through a multiplicity of points of view–political, literary, historical, architectural, geographical—the ideas of asylum and refuge in the eighteenth century.
