Bernard-Marie Koltès is one of the most famous French playwrights of the 1980s. Most well known for his 1986 play Dans la solitude des champs de coton and for his long-running collaboration with Patrice Chéreau, he remains largely unknown outside academic and scholarly circles in Anglophone countries in spite of being widely performed, read, and studied throughout Europe. Written in 1977 and first published in 1980, La nuit juste avant les forêts represents the debut of Koltès's mature style.
