Festival des Cinq Continents 2023: Found in Translation

La Maison Française of NYU is delighted to announce the 5th edition of the Festival des Cinq Continents, organized in partnership with the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. We are excited to welcome the public back for an incredible week of programs from April 17th-22nd under the theme "Found in Translation." Join us for a rich tapestry of interwoven events with celebrated Francophone artists in visual arts (Momar Seck), music (Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba, Marilyn Nonken), poetry (Sylvie Kandé, Isabelle Balot), theatre (Mamadou Mahmoud N'Dongo), and a conference on Women's Mobilization in Francophone Africa. Events are free and open to all!

A contemporary and intersectional interpretation of the timeless tale of Medea by Mamadou Mahmoud N'Dongo, staged by Kourtney Rutherford and translated from French to English by Audrey Rogulski.

About the playwright

Mamadou Mahmoud N'Dongo

Born in 1970 in Senegal, Mamadou Mahmoud N'Dongo is a French writer, playwright, photographer and filmmaker who grew up in Seine Saint Denis in Drancy and is currently living in Amsterdam. He studied art history, cinema, and literature with Odette Dagan in Paris. He also studied music history at the conservatory of Drancy. 

He starts publishing novels and short stories in 1997: L'Histoire du fauteuil qui s'amouracha d'une âme, L'Errance de Sidiki Bâ, Bridge Road, El Hadj, La Géométrie des variables, Mood Indigo, Remington, Les Corps intermédiaires, Kraft, Golda Kane, La Concordance des Temps.

Parallel to his literary work, he began to write for the theater in 2013: Rosa Vermelha, Guatemala, Bruits Bancs, Territoire, Empty, Station, X, Different Maps, Maintenant que je me suis habituée à ta présence, Réfectoire, Heidi H, Il y a ceux qui veulent mourir un jour de pluie.

A photographer since 1991, he is also a filmmaker. Since 1994 he has directed several experimental films: Le Mangeur d'hélium, Solo, L'œil, Different Maps, Heidi H, Alors j’ai préféré la nuit, Rita.

About the director

Kourtney Rutherford

Kourtney Rutherford is a citizen of both France and the US. Since 2019 she has supported French culture in New York at institutions such as French Institute/Alliance Française and La Maison Française of NYU. Prior to this work she had a career spanning over 20 years with cutting edge theater groups such as Big Dance Theater, Witness Relocation, and Half Straddle/Tina Satter. A graduate of Tisch/NYU, Kourtney is also a producer at Manhattan Neighborhood Network public access television channel. 

About the translator

Audrey Rogulski
audrey

Audrey Rogulski is currently a senior at NYU studying Drama and Philosophy. Her research is centered on the intersections of Aesthetics and Politics in 20th and 21st century Francophone theater. You can also find her at the reception desk of La Maison Française, where she serves as Office and Special Events Assistant.

Audrey is an incoming PhD student at the Department of French Literature, Thought and Culture at NYU for the Fall 2023 semester.
