Annual Barra O Donnabhain Lecture: Dr. Art Hughes

Dr. Art Hughes, Ulster University, most recently author of Rí Thoraí – The King of Tory, (Ben Madigan Press, Belfast, 2018), will deliver the annual Barra Ó Donnabháin lecture with reflections on the life of Patsy Dan Rodgers, King of Tory, who passed away in 2018. Dr. Hughes is an Irish-language scholar based at Ulster University, Belfast. In addition to his research on the Celtic languages and their literature, he was a visiting Fulbright Professor to NYU in 2009-10. He has also presented TV documentaries in Irish, his latest being on Martin Luther and The Gaelic World (BBC, October 2017). Currently, he is completing a bilingual collection of poems. Dr. Hughes has written or edited eighteen books, and countless academic articles. Signed copies will be available to purchase. Bilingual lecture, Irish/English.
This annual lecture was established in 2006 in honor of Barra Ó Donnabháin, a beloved and influential teacher and advocate of the language, who was originally from Leap, Co. Cork. He emigrated in 1963 after graduating with a degree in Irish and Latin from UCC. He was for many years a columnist with the Irish Echo. Past speakers include Ambassador Dan Mulhall, Louis De Paor, Breandán Mac Suibhne, Máire Ní hAnnracháin, Alan Titley, and Nuala Ní Domhnaill, among others.
