“ROSIE WON THE WAR”: Renata Stih & Frieder Schnock in Conversation with Hilary Lewis
Deutsches Haus at NYU presents “ROSIE WON THE WAR,” a conversation with Berlin-based artists Renata Stih and Frieder Schnock to discuss their work in terms of the history of Rosie the Riveter and the legacy of women at work since World War II. They will be joined by Hilary Lewis, Chief Curator & Creative Director, The Glass House.
“ROSIE WON THE WAR,” the work of artists Renata Stih & Frieder Schnock is currently on display at NYU’s Kimmel Windows Gallery, offering both the NYU community and countless others on La Guardia Place and West 3rd Street near Washington Square the opportunity to witness the wit and social commentary embedded in the brilliant work of Stih & Schnock. “ROSIE WON THE WAR” re-examines the seminal work of Norman Rockwell, Rosie the Riveter, and re-imagines women of today as heroic figures surmounting the history of World War II, employing expression in the vein of historic European painting. In doing so, Stih & Schnock confront not only the imagery and history of women who supported the war effort of the 1940s, but also the overarching issue of the depiction of women at work who engage in professional and heroic acts. They reconsider the role of women today and also frame this within the relationship between the United States and Europe. Did Rosie win the war? Or are we still in a battle? The artists will present not only this work but also some of their other conceptual projects, which frequently address major issues of human rights, history, immigration and the relationship between the United States and Germany. Much of their work is designed for and installed in the public realm.
Prof. Renata Stih's and Prof. Dr. Frieder Schnock's work is making history visible, tracing complex relationships between society and art, shaped by studies about how memory functions in the social sphere and how it is reflected symbolically in the space of museums and the city.
Hilary Lewis is Chief Curator and Creative Director at The Glass House, a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She contributed the text that accompanies the exhibition.
