Perspectives from the Field brings CLACS alumni from different eras to engage with current students and the NYU community at large. Moderated by CLACS Director, Professor Dylon Robbins, alumni will reflect on their research and personal experiences at CLACS and their professional journeys after. How does an interdisciplinary lens and expertise on Latin America and the Caribbean shape their work across multiple industries? Join us for this ongoing series and career-building opportunity.
For this session, we welcome back CLACS/GloJo graduates Dustin Christensen (2016) & Camila Osorio (2016) to talk about their journalism career paths.
About the Speakers:
Dusty Christensen (CLACS/Global Journalism 2016) is a staff writer at the Daily Hampshire Gazette newspaper in western Massachusetts, where he covers the city of Holyoke. His thesis project — "Rural Ecuador: America's New Retirement Spot" — was an audio documentary published by the NPR show Latino U.S.A. that explored U.S. retirees gentrifying indigenous villages in Ecuador. He was a FLAS academic year fellow who studied Quechua.
Camila Osorio (CLACS/Global Journalism 2016) is a Colombian journalist based in Mexico City. She currently covers Latin American culture for the Spanish newspaper El País. Previously, she worked as a fact checker for the New Yorker magazine, and as an investigative reporter for the politics site La Silla Vacía, in Colombia. Camila graduated from the Glojo program in 2016, and her thesis was on banana companies that displaced peasants during Colombia’s civil war. It was published on The New Republic.
