Book launch and celebration for the 20th anniversary of Latinos in New York. Speakers include Miriam Jimenez Roman from the AfroLatin@ Forum, Angelo Falcon from National Institute for Latino Policy and NYU SCA's very own Cecilia Marquez. With poetry performance from Bonafide Rojas.
Speakers
Miriam Jimenez Roman is a Visiting Scholar at NYU and a the Executive Director of the AfroLatin@ Forum which seeks to raise awareness of Latin@s of African descent in the United States. She is the author of The AfroLatin@ Reader: History and Culture in the United States.
Angelo Falcon is a political scientist best known for starting the Institute for Puerto Rican Policy (IPR) in New York City in the early 1980s, a non profit and nonpartisan policy center that focuses on Latino issues in the United States. It is now known as the National Institute for Latino Policy and falcon serves as President.
Cecilia Marquez is an Assistant Professor in Latino/a Studeis in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis. She earned her MA and PhD in American History at the Universtiy of Virginia. She also holds a BA in Black Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies from Swathmore College. Her first book project,
The Strange Career of Juan Crow: Latino/as and the Making of the U.S. South, 1940-1970, examines the social and cultural history of Latinos in the post WWII South.
