Join us for the opening of "Fatherland", the Winter/Spring 2017 exhibition at the Gallery Space at Wagner. Staged in recognition of International Human Rights Day, it features photography by visual artists Juan José Barboza-Gubo and Andrew Mroczek. The exhibit is presented in conjunction with the panel discussion "Fatherland: LBGTQIA Human Rights in Latin America & Beyond."
"Fatherland" showcases recent works from Barboza-Gubo and Mroczek’s ongoing photographic project highlighting the social justice struggles of LBGTQIA communities in Peru. The images reveal the Peruvian landscape as spaces of evidence within the extreme, and rather common, circumstances of violent hate crimes motivated by homophobia and transphobia.
The accompanying panel discussion features both artists along with a roster of experts in the fields of international human rights, social justice, Latin American studies, and gender and queer studies. These include:
Fabrice Houdart, Human Right Officer, United Nations
Salvador Vidal-Ortiz, Associate Professor of Sociology, American University
Nahal Zamani, Advocacy Program Manager, Center for Constitutional Rights
Claudia Sofía Garriga-López (moderator), Dept. of Social & Cultural Analysis, New York University
The evening’s program is as follows:
6:00pm – 7:00pm: Exhibition Preview with the Artists
7:00pm – 8:30pm: Panel Discussion
8:30 – 9:30pm: Gallery & Post-panel reception
"Fatherland" is curated by Frankie Crescioni-Santoni. For more information, please contact wagner.gallery@nyu.edu or 212.998.7401.
