As an NYU psychology student, you have the opportunity to learn firsthand how knowledge in psychology is acquired through participation in research studies being conducted by Department of Psychology faculty and doctoral students. Participation in studies can lead to study credit for the purposes of fulfilling a research requirement for a course or monetary compensation.
Participate in Research
All Introduction to Psychology students are required to participate in 7 hours of research studies. Advanced psychology students enrolled in Cognition, Personality and Social Psychology are required to participate in 2 hours of research studies.
You may sign-up for studies offering credit on the NYU Psychology Research Sign-Up System. Detailed information regarding how to fulfill the research requirement for your course can be found in the Student Guides for the Introduction to Psychology and Advanced courses.
The following guides are available to existing students via the PsychCentral portal.
- The "IntrotoPsychStudentGuide" is a description of the lab participation requirement, how it works, and how to avoid problems completing it, for students taking Introduction to Psychology in Fall or Spring. This is also used to indicate how you choose to fulfill the lab requirement (participate in studies or write article critiques).
- The "AdvancedPsychStudentGuide" is a description of the lab participation requirement, how it works, and how to avoid problems completing it, for students in Stats, Core A and Core B courses in Fall or Spring. This is also used to indicate how you choose to fulfill the lab requirement (participate in studies or write article critiques).
Please note, participation in research studies is voluntary. If for any reason you choose not to participate in studies, a written assignment may be completed to fulfill the research requirement for your course.
As of Fall 2021, parental consent forms are no longer required for students under the age of 18 partcipating in research.
If you have a particular research interest you would like to pursue or would simply like to gain research experience, you may want to consider joining a lab. Each semester, many labs actively seek new research assistants to join their labs.
To join a lab, please contact the lab of your interest directly. A list of all Department of Psychology laboratories are available here.
Undergraduates, please see the Undergraduate Research Opportunities page.
