Understanding and quantifying order in physics, nature, and other human endeavors with an eye toward finding insights from classical information theory. Topics included will be: defining order and disorder; traditional order metrics; entropy; correlations and correlation functions; broken symmetry; Landau theory, order parameters, free energy expansions; quantifying information: Shannon entropy and Komogorov-Chaitin complexity; Hopfield neural networks; approximate methods: data compression: Huffman coding, Lempel-Ziv; other types of order: topological, hyperuniformity; is random (e.g. close packing) well-defined; non-equilibrium vs. equilibrium: detailed balance and time reversal, Kullback-Leibler divergence, mutual information; dynamic and thermodynamic phase transitions, scaling and critical exponents from data compression.
