In memoriam
Dr. Jack G. Shaheen 1935-2017
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden loss of Dr. Jack G. Shaheen.
Dr. Shaheen was a writer, lecturer, and researcher well-known for his life-long dedication to critiques of racial and ethnic stereotypes in American pop culture, and in particular Hollywood films and television series. Among his many works, most notable was his book Reel Bad Arabs which was adopted into a documentary film. Dr. Shaheen was Professor Emeritus of Mass Communications at Southern Illinois University.
Dr. Shaheen has been an important member of the Kevorkian Center community. He has served as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Center for the past few years. His collection of more than 40 years worth of news clips, audio files, video clips and films, toys, posters, and other memorabilia demonstrating the widespread and long-lasting mis-representation of Arabs and Muslims in particular were donated to NYU. This archive is still being catalogued at the Tamiment Library and we anticipate its launch to the public soon.
Please join us in honoring and celebrating the life and work of Dr. Jack G. Shaheen.
