Given the unusual circumstances impacting classrooms at all levels, across the world this year, the Kevorkian Center, in partnership with the Global Nomads Group, have developed a special fellowship program centered on building virtual exchange between teachers in grades 7-12 in the United States and in the Middle East. We are all teaching in a virtual capacity to some extent this year, and we hope that this program provides an opportunity for teachers to build curricula that connects students, teachers, and scholars across the globe in new and exciting ways that would be difficult or impossible under different circumstances.
This fellowship will leverage the resources and scholarly network available at the Kevorkian Center to build robust professional development and international collaboration around the Global Nomads Student to World Program. Selected fellows will agree to implement activities built into Global Nomads’ Art in Action curriculum during the Spring 2021 semester. Fellows will participate in three (3) Saturday workshops in December and January hosted on Zoom, which will last approximately three hours each by the Kevorkian Center where they will be able to meet and share their experiences with each other and hear from scholars and expert practitioners whose work and scholarship will provide opportunities for fellows to enhance the experience of their students when they engage with the Global Nomads service.
During the Spring Semester, Fellows will have additional opportunities to convene workshops, work collaboratively with each other online, and facilitate synchronous and asynchronous interaction between their students in the United States and the Middle East. At the end of the Fellowship, teachers will be expected to produce shareable curricular materials that may be used by any teachers who are engaging in the Global Nomads Program in the future.
The Kevorkian Center anticipates selecting eight (8) exceptional teachers for this fellowship. Four (4) of those teachers will be teaching in any subject in Grades 7-12 in any location in the United States. Four (4) further teachers will be selected in partnership with the Global Nomads Group’s office in Amman, Jordan. Each Fellow will receive a stipend of $1,250 upon selection. At this time, the Kevorkian Center is unable to extend Visiting Scholar Status to Teacher Fellows due to University Regulations, but if this restriction is lifted teachers may be considered for this status and thus be able to access electronic resources made available through NYU Libraries.
All fellows will be expected to attend all of the Saturday workshops made available by the Kevorkian Center and to participate in synchronous and asynchronous activities that are developed in the Spring Semester, and implement lessons in their Spring classes that engage their students with the Art in Action Student to World program offered by Global Nomads. The Saturday Workshops will be held at a time suitable for synchronous participation by fellows in Amman and the United States (beginning after 5PM in Amman, and no earlier than 10AM EST in the United States) The Kevorkian Center can provide CTLE credit hours and certificates for these Saturday Workshops, and will work with teachers to provide what we can so they may acquire professional development credit and all participants will receive certificates of completion. All fellows will also be expected to produce at the end of the workshop a sample curricular resource that they have developed over the course of the year that may be shared with the wider teaching public.
Selected Fellows must meet the following requirements:
Teach in Grades 7-12, in any subject area*.
Have reliable access to Wifi throughout the fellowship.
Teach classes where their students have access to WiFi enabled devices at a minimum ratio of one (1) device for every three (3) students.
Teach classes with students who have at least an intermediate grasp of English.
Have authorization to implement Global Nomads’ Student to World program in their classroom.

Applicants will be asked to provide a statement of purpose not exceeding two single-spaced pages describing their interest in implementing the Art in Action curriculum, detailing how it will benefit their students, and why they wish to pursue this fellowship. Applicants must also provide a C.V. and answer all of the questions in the form.

*Normally Kevorkian Teacher Fellowships are open to grades K-12, but because of the nature of the Global Nomads Curriculum we are only able to offer Fellowships to teachers working with students of a certain age.
