Composition and Theory
Students in the NYU GSAS omposition/Theory specialization explore and refine chosen compositional approaches, largely through one-on-one work with faculty. The composers contribute in a fundamental way, as well, to the critical debate, analysis, and presentation of new music in the Department.

Historical Musicology
The Musicology specialization at New York University is one of the three areas of study in the department - alongside Ethnomusicology, and Composition and Theory. We do not regard these areas as mutually exclusive, but rather expect all students in any one to explore the concepts and course offerings of the other two.

Ethnomusicology
The ethnomusicology specialization at NYU emphasizes critical and experimental approaches to the anthropology of sound. While this area assigns central importance to ethnography, we are resolutely interdisciplinary, incorporating methodologies and theoretical orientations from fields throughout the humanities and social sciences.
