Intermediate Urdu I

Urdu literature and Film: Viewing film adaptations of literature and reading excerpts with special emphasis on cultural context and use of language in various social and historical contexts. Students view such films as Pakeeza, Mughal-e-Azam, Umrao Jaan, Shatranj ke Khilari, Manto, Ghalib, Mandi, Kaffan, Garm Hawa, and/or others based on student interest. This course will be taught remotely. MEIS language courses are categorized as online for fall 2020: each week, some sessions will meet synchronously and some asynchronously, as students and faculty determine together. When health and safety conditions permit, we may be able to schedule in-person meetings.

Continues where Elementary Urdu leaves off. The students are introduced to literary texts. Along with specific language tasks, criticism and analysis now form part of the curriculum. Dictation, memorizing poetry, comprehension, and engaging in longer sessions of conversation form an important part of this course. By the end of this course, students should have achieved some fluency in reading literary texts, writing short essays, and carrying on a conversation.
