Why study Italian in Italy? Why Florence in particular?

Located in the center of Italy, Florence also provides an ideal point of departure for exploring the peninsula and its unparalleled archaeological, architectural, and art historical treasures, just an hour and half from Rome and less than three hours to Venice.
Is study abroad mandatory for majors?
No but it is highly encouraged.
What kinds of courses does NYU Florence offer?

Do all courses at NYU Florence count toward the major or minor?
Not necessarily. Most classes beginning with ITAL-UA will count. Some courses with significant Italian content can count to the major or minor. You must receive permission from the department for a course to count. Email a syllabus of the course and your N# to italian.undergraduate@nyu.edu prior to registering. She will forward the course to the DUS for review.
Can I still study at NYU Florence even if I am a double major?
Most likely. NYU Florence offers a wide variety of interdisciplinary course. As such, you may be able to fulfill a variety of requirements while you are there. It is recommended you speak with your advisor prior to studying abroad. Double majors have studied at NYU Florence without impeding their time to degree.
When should I study abroad?
It’s up to you but sophomore or junior year is recommended. That way you have foundational knowledge of the country and language so you can get the most out of your study abroad. However, Italian fluency is not required to study abroad so you can really study abroad whenever fits your schedule.
Should I study in the summer or during the year?
It’s up to you and what you’re academic trajectory is like. Some students with stricter pathways to degree completion, such as Stern students, find studying away during the summer more doable.
What is NYU Summer in Florence?
Run by Professor Stefano Albertini, this is a 6 week program (summer session I) in which you take 2 courses. Students who may not have time to study abroad during the regular academic year or want to graduate early may find this program particularly appealing.
Are scholarships available for studying abroad?
Yes! Your NYU Financial Aid package will still apply while you are studying at an NYU Global Academic Center, such as NYU Florence. The cost of tuition and fees are the same as those at the NYU in New York campus. See below for additional funding opportunities.
