Topics in Irish Literature:
John P WatersMW: 6:10 PM - 8:40 PM ONLI
This course will survey two separate but related cultural movements that produced striking bodies of modernist literature and culture. While explicit links between the Irish political and cultural revival were made by Alain Locke, Claude McKay, Marcus Garvey and others, the deeper formal connections between Irish and African-American writing await full investigation. This course will read texts by Synge, Joyce, Wilde, Yeats, Colum and Lady Gregory alongside works by Chesnutt, Hughes, McKay, Hurston, Locke, Cullen and others, examining how the disciplines of Folklore Studies, Anthropology, Musicology, and Sociology were deployed to understand Irish and African-American communities in ways that impacted literary forms and modes of representation, and influenced how race and ethnicity were conceptualized for political deployment.
