Vanisha Sampat graduated from the MA Program in International Relations in May 2021 and is originally from India. She received a BSc in International Politics and Government in her undergraduate studies before coming to NYU.

Why did you choose the IR program at NYU?
The MAIR program at NYU takes a holistic approach to global affairs. The faculty offer a variety of perspectives to learn from. I remember going through the list of courses and thinking that it was simply impossible to choose. The program also has a fantastic alumni network!

Which has been the class you most enjoyed? And the one in which you learned the most?
Every class has contributed to my intellectual and professional growth - but one that stands out is Political Risk and Prediction with Professor Maha Aziz. I also learned a lot from Professor James Nolt’s class on US Foreign Policy in East Asia.

What advice would you give to future students of the program? 
Read as much as you can, even if you do not agree with the perspective you are studying. Keep and open mind and talk, debate, discuss, and don’t be afraid of leaving your intellectual comfort zone! 

Make the most of your classes. Visit professors’ office hours and participate in class discussions. Figure out your strengths and weaknesses, get comfortable debating and discussing important ideas. New York City has opportunities for everyone - I landed most of my internships by making use of NYU’s Handshake portal and through discussions with peers and faculty, whose suggestions were invaluable!

What are your plans after you graduate? How has this program prepared you for that?
I will be working with an EdTech start up that works on upskilling and employing blue collar workers in the GCC. I am extremely grateful to NYU for preparing me for this opportunity!
