The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) is conducting research for “Countering Radicalization through Life Stories in Western Balkans”. The project is a highly relevant study into countering violent extremism in the Western Balkans region, specifically: Albania, Macedonia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and Kosovo. It is an action-oriented project with the purpose of supporting countering religious and ethnonational violent extremism and re-integration of formerly convicted individuals. Life stories are a key component of the project and are used to enhance awareness about the dangers of radicalization and implement a socially innovative approach to counter and prevent radicalization. Life stories are based on interviews with disengaged, vulnerable and convicted individuals, judges, police, lawyers, municipality and government officials, academics, religious and NGO leaders.
The results are twofold, research and impact based. The research outlines the drivers of radicalization and provide a framework of indicators on disengagement and re-integration processes in Western Balkans and policy recommendations for the governments, IOs and other actors, providing a basis for analysis and review of institutional policies for local actors, but also for the international actors. The life story archive (open access) will be shown, containing biographies of disengaged individuals and directly affected individuals (family, community and religious/ethnic members) whose life experiences reveal important aspects of preventing/countering violent extremism, disengagement and reintegration processes that serve to prevent/counter radicalization and promote re-integration. The archive focuses on life stories providing solutions, specifically examples of what works well. In addition, the project encourages local grassroots organizations and individuals to use of the life stories approach and upload them.
