Thanks to recent gifts and the university’s commitment to our program, the IFS now offers all admitted students at least one-half tuition remission (and more for our best applicants). 100% of our students receive financial aid, with no teaching or TA requirements. We strongly believe that, at this pivotal moment in their lives, M.A. students should devote all of their time to their intellectual development.
Students admitted to the master's programs in French Studies will receive an Institute of French Studies Scholarship, which covers 50% of tuition (not registration and services fees). Further funding is available on a competitive basis and provides an additional tuition scholarship, covering 62.5%, 75% and sometimes up to 100% of tuition costs.
For students admitted to Joint or Dual Master's programs, our scholarships apply to French Studies credits only. Further funding might be available through our partnering departments.
Students are encouraged to seek out other forms of aid as well. A comprehensive list of fellowships, prizes, and awards appears in the Financing Graduate Education section of the GSAS Application.
There is no specific procedure to apply for scholarships: by applying for admission, candidates are ipso facto applying for the best available scholarships.
TAPIF Scholarship Award
We've partnered with the Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF) to provide scholarships to qualified alumni in recognition of their commitment to language and cross-cultural exchange. We encourage qualified former Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF) participants to study in our Master of Arts in French Studies program. To help defray tuition costs, IFS reserves some of our most generous fellowships to top former TAPIF alumni. These fellowships cover between 75% and 100% of tuition costs (currently approximately $37,500 to $50,000). Top former TAPIF alumni may also receive a $3,000 summer scholarship during our program’s summer session in Paris.
To apply and receive the TAPIF scholarship, submit your application for one of our degree programs by the next deadline. When you apply, please indicate that you're affiliated with TAPIF and include your experience on your resume or curriculum vitae. To waive your application fee, please contact Mariah Harvey at mh3442@nyu.edu.
