We are delighted to announce that Tony Haouam (doctoral candidate in IFS/French) was awarded a 2023-2024 Public Humanities Doctoral Fellowship. The fellowship supports advanced doctoral candidates while they complete their dissertations and gain experience in public-facing institutions. Tony will work at French Politics, Culture & Society and Berghahn. FPCS, which is based at the IFS, is an academic journal that explores modern and contemporary France from the perspectives of the social sciences, history, and cultural analysis. Berghahn is a distinguished scholarly publisher of books and journals in the humanities and social sciences. Stay tuned to hear about the event Tony is organizing in Spring 2024. Félicitations, Tony!
P.h.D. student Hilary Handin translated two chapters in IFS alumni Mark Ingram and Kathryn Kleppinger's edited volume, The Marseille Mosaic, which came out in January 2023. Additionally, Hilary has an article published in a special issue of the journal Histoire Urbaine, co-edited by our past visiting professor Sarah Gensburger, in which she discusses the reintegration of Parisian Jews after the Holocaust. Both of these publications reflect her interest in the intersection of spatial and social justice issues. Find the journal article here.

We are thrilled to share that doctoral Candidate Arthur Ségard recently participated in an episode of Entendez-Vous l'éco, a France Culture podcast for Radio France in which he discussed the development of Freak Shows in the 19th century. This work is connected with Arthur's broader focus on "otherness" in modern society and "fin-de-siècle" French literature and exclusionist discourses. Check out the full episode here. Additionally, Arthur has his own podcast, Intertexte, a Proust Questionnaire style conversation analyzing a wide range of texts.

Doctoral Candidate Chayma Drira was recently invited to take part in an episode of RadioFrance’s culture podcast, Affaire à Suivre, where she discussed her research on memories of trauma and forms of reparation in Chicago. This discussion is a part of her greater interest in comparing racial and social inequalities in greater Chicago and Paris. Check out the full episode and article to learn more.

PhD student Caitlin O’Keefe was recently featured on a Women’s History Month episode of the popular French radio show Historiquement Votre on Europe 1 where she discusses the history of Sylvia Beach and Beach’s role as the founder of the Shakespeare and Company lending library and bookshop in Paris. This work is reflective of Caitlin’s greater interest in the cultural history of the 20th century as it relates to gender and sexuality, feminist activism, and women’s contributions to literary modernism.
