Celebrating Ten Years of the DAAD Poetics Chair: An Evening with Marcel Beyer and Katy Derbyshire

Marcel Beyer grew up in Western Germany and moved to Dresden in 1996. His writings include novels, poetry, essays, and librettos. Three of his novels (The Karnau Tapes, 1997; Spies, 2005; and Kaltenburg, 2012) were published in translation in the U.S. by Harcourt. A graphic novel of The Karnau Tapes by Ulli Lust was published by The New York Review of Books in 2017. 2021 will see Katy Derbyshire’s translation of Putins’s Postbox, a book on living in Eastern Germany and traveling around Central Europe after the Cold war, published by V&Q Books. Last year, Marcel Beyer co-edited the Works in Four Volumes of the poet and essayist Thomas Kling, published by Suhrkamp in Berlin. Prizes include the Georg Büchner Prize in 2016 and the Peter Huchel Prize for his latest volume of poetry, Dämonenräumdienst, in 2021.

Katy Derbyshire translates contemporary German writers including Heike Geissler, Olga Grjasnowa, and Clemens Meyer. She co-hosts a monthly translation lab in Berlin and the bi-monthly live Dead Ladies Show, which has its own podcast. Katy Derbyshire is now publisher at V&Q Books, exporting “remarkable writing from Germany” to the UK and Ireland.
