The question serves as a Cicerone through various youth and bohème cultures of the 20th century. A look at the role avant-garde has played as idea and practice in different historical situations will help understand how poets have come to experimental forms of writing for quite or seemingly different reasons. Poets who see their work as experimental position themselves between a tradition of the new and a personal interest in alternatives. The answer to the question will be a panorama of the roles art has sought or found itself in in various places in the course of 20th century history. Course will be held in English, texts in other languages will be provided with English translations.
