Pui Shan Fiona Hui was born and raised in Hong Kong. She earned her B.A. at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and her M.A. in Vocal Performance from the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University. She also has a certificate in Teaching Chinese to speakers of foreign languages at Teaching College at Columbia University.
She is a language educator at NYU and is a certified tester for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Her language testing skills are employed nationally and internationally by corporations & governmental agencies seeking to evaluate the Cantonese proficiency of their staff.
Ms. Hui’s specific interests in the language field are Cantonese heritage/non- heritage education, second language acquisition, Cantonese testing, rating, curriculum, and assessment design.
Before joining NYU as a full-time faculty member, she was a performing artist in music theatre productions. She is also a voice/diction coach, vocalist, translator, voiceover talent, and casting agent. Her skills have been retained for several artistic, legal, and promotional efforts. These projects included work in the criminal justice system for the King’s County District Attorney, work in the arts for the Walt Disney Company, and national theater.
