Fall 2021

With the support of NYU Arts and Science, the Department of English at New York University seeks to showcase talented emerging and early career scholars featuring new work, new voices and new perspectives. The Emerging Scholars Program aims to assist in building a vibrant, diverse and inclusive community of scholars and educators by bringing a small number of excellent early career scholars to NYU to present their research.

The Department of English invites applications for its upcoming Emerging Scholars Symposium: a three-part Lecture Series to be held in April 2022. Advanced doctoral candidates as well as recent doctoral degree recipients working on Native American and Indigenous Literatures, irrespective of approach and/or region, are invited to submit a 500-word abstract for a proposed 40-minute lecture showcasing their research, along with a Curriculum Vitae. Selected candidates will be notified around February 1st and receive an honorarium in addition to travel expenses.

Professor Dara Regaignon's book Writing Maternity: Medicine, Anxiety, Rhetoric and Genre was published by Ohio University Press in June.

Professor Brandon Woolf's book Institutional Theatrics: Performing Arts Policy in Post-Wall Berlin was published by Northwestern University Press this June.

Professor Cyrus Patell's book, Lucasfilm: Filmmaking, Philosophy, and the Star Wars Universe, was published in July by Bloomsbury. 

Professor Jini Kim Watson's new book Cold War Reckonings: Authoritarianism and the Genres of Decolonization was published in August with Fordham UP.

Professor Zachary Samalin's new book, The Masses Are Revolting: Victorian Culture and the Political Aesthetics of Disgust, is published by Cornell UP. 

Professor Elizabeth McHenry's new book To Make Negro Literature: Writing, Literary Practice, and African American Authorship is published by Duke University Press.

Professor Sukhdev Sandhu has been awarded a 2021/2022 The UNDO Fellowship for radical practices in documentary filmmaking. Sandhu will be working with filmmaker Deborah Stratman to explore the Anthropocene, monumentality, and the politics of audibility. Read the full press release to learn more about Sandhu's project. 

Professor Toral Gajarawala has been awarded a Spring 2022 Camargo Core Fellowship for scholars, thinkers, and artists! Read the press release to find out more about Toral and the other fellows.

PhD student Andy Zuliani's debut novel will be released in October. An impressive work with powerful prose and imagery, Zuliani's novel explores issues of gentrification, capitalism, and climate change with expert skill. Read more in the press release here.

Professor Simon Trujillo has recieved an Honorable Mention for the MLA Prize in United States Latina and Latino and Chicana and Chicano Literary and Cultural Studies for his book, Land Uprising.
