Fall Semester: EAST-UA 998 Independent Study (2-4 credits)
Spring Semester: EAST-UA 997 Independent Study (2-4 credits)
Eligibility
- Independent Study is done ONLY at the NYU New York Campus
- Students should have a 3.5 GPA and must be an EAS Major/Minor
- Independent Study adviser(s) must be a full-time Faculty and/or a full-time Language Lecturer
CIVILIZATION-BASED INDEPENDENT STUDY
The courses/topics must be unavailable or not offered as regularly scheduled East Asian civilization courses
Requirements
- Students must submit a final portfolio that includes a 30-50 page final paper
- While working on the project, students should check in regularly with their adviser(s) and submit written drafts to demonstrate progress and to enable the adviser to suggest necessary revisions
- Students signing up for Independent Study should take maximum initiative and responsibility for designing and executing the project
LANGUAGE-BASED INDEPENDENT STUDY
The student should have a level of language competence high enough for independent reading of original material in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. That means at least Advanced II passed with a grade of A or A-.
Requirements
- Students must submit a final portfolio that includes the following:
- Original text
- A translation of about 10-20 pages of material in the original language, with notes where appropriate
- A statement of approximately 1,000 words explaining the significance of the text that the student has chosen to translate
- While working on the project, students should check in regularly with their adviser(s) and submit written drafts to demonstrate progress and to enable the Language Lecturer to suggest necessary revisions
- Given the heavy teaching load each Language Lecturer bears, the Lecturer may not be able to provide the same amount of help and supervision as in a regular language class. Therefore it is essential for the student signing up for Independent Study to take maximum initiative and responsibility for designing and executing the project
