Guidelines

EAST-GA 1500, Independent Study

Independent study provides students with the opportunity to work one-on-one with an instructor on a particular topic or creative project.  Registration for this course requires approval of the Director of Graduate Studies and the professor supervising the course. Students should consult with the professor on a proposal that should include a project abstract (100-200 words) and a bibliography.

While plans for the independent study may be tentative at the time the proposal form is submitted, it is important to put the plan in writing at the beginning of the semester so that the student and professor have a clear understanding of the work involved.

Eligibility

1. An Independent Study may be done ONLY at the NYU New York Campus.

2. The student must be a graduate student at NYU.

3. An Independent Study adviser(s) must be a full-time Faculty at NYU.

Requirements

1. Students must submit a final portfolio that will include a minimum of 20 pages of writing for the course.
2. While working on the project, students should check in regularly with their adviser(s) and submit written drafts as necessary to demonstrate progress.

3. Students signing up for an Independent Study course should take maximum initiative and responsibility for designing and executing the project

4. Advanced language reading courses should be approved by both the student's primary adviser and the DGS.
