Every year, Deutsches Haus at NYU invites four authors from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland to take part in a ten-week residency program, which aims to expose them to the challenges and advantages of life in the unique metropolis of New York City. Deutsches Haus at NYU regularly organizes readings, performances, and conferences focused on the issues of reading, writing, and translating literature. We also work to introduce our writers-in-residence to our New York audience.
Since our inception in 1985, the Deutsches Haus writer-in-residence program has been sponsored by the Deutscher Literaturfonds e.V., Darmstadt.
The writer-in-residence is selected by a committee consisting of members from the Deutscher Literaturfonds and Deutsches Haus at NYU and announced at the annual award of the Kranichsteiner Literary Prize in Darmstadt. In 2001, the Max Kade Foundation agreed to support the program, followed in 2007 by Pro Helvetia, and in 2014 by the Federal Chancellery of Austria. They agreed to each sponsor one Deutsches Haus writer-in-residence per year.
