My name is Laura and I am from Hamburg, where I am just about to finish my studies in sociology and psychology. I took an extra semester to gain practical experience and to spend some time abroad before continuing with my masters. My internship at the language program at Deutsches Haus is the first step that I am taking in my personal gap year and I am really excited to start here. Not only does the internship offer me the possibility to acquire experiences in what is a relatively new working field for me, but it also brings me to New York, and to the U.S. in general, for the very first time.
During my internship at Deutsches Haus I support many different aspects of the language program, including our social media appearance. I am involved in creating flyers and brochures, assisting the Haus-Club and kids events, and working at the front desk. Although culture and language are two separate divisions at Deutsches Haus, there is plenty of overlap and a close cooperation in many ways, which I really enjoy. Additionally, I think the mix of our language and cultural program is what makes Deutsches Haus so special and what I like most about it, as well as the really friendly atmosphere within the Deutsches Haus team.
Besides my internship I am trying to get used to chlorinated water, to the “subway language” and the unlimited range of things you can discover and do in NYC! But so far everything is working out pretty well :) . I haven’t planned longer journeys during my time in NY but I would love to do some short trips to Boston, Washington D.C. and the areas surrounding New York before I return to Germany for a few months in mid-January. After that, I hope to embark on another new journey!
