Emily Kako Masuda holds a BA from New York University, where she majored in Biology and minored in Anthropology. Having received her cosmetology education from Blanche Macdonald Centre, she is currently a certified and practicing makeup artist. Her experience with beauty making has led to her academic interest in examining makeup as a mode of cultural production and a personal fashion practice. She is interested in researching how, within a postfeminist fashion culture, makeup plays a pivotal role in the construction of racial, classed, and gendered identities. At XE, she hopes to explore her research interests through topics relating to critical feminist theories, media studies, and social belonging.
