This interdisciplinary minor, shared with CLACS, consists of 5 courses in Latin American, Caribbean, and/or Latino studies and demonstrated language ability in one relevant language.
REQUIREMENTS (1 Course):
SPAN-UA 205 “Cultural History of Latin America” Offered every fall; taught in Spanish. Prerequisite: Critical Approaches (SPAN-UA 200).
OR
CORE-UA XXX.XXX a CORE CURRICULUM COURSE affiliated with Caribbean, or Latin American Studies, offered through CORE and taught in English.
Course Electives (4 Courses)
Electives may be drawn from the rich offering of courses on Latin America, the Caribbean, and/or Latino studies across the university. Offerings vary by semester, but are regularly offered in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, CLACS, Anthropology, History, Politics, SCA and Art History, as well as at Gallatin and other schools. Advanced courses in Spanish and Portuguese have the following prerequisites: 300-level courses have 50/51 as prerequisite; 400-level courses have a 300 Level course as prerequisite.
Advanced Language Requirements
These requisites (which can be fulfilled at any time prior to completion of the major) do not count toward the 9 courses in the major. ONE language is required for the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Minor in one of the categories below:
1. Spanish: demonstrated language ability through the level of Advanced Grammar and Composition (SPAN-UA 50) or Advanced Spanish for Spanish Speaking Students (SPAN-UA 51).
OR
2. Portuguese: demonstrated language ability through the intensive elementary (PORT-UA 10 or PORT-UA 11)
OR
3. Indigenous and Diasporic Languages (including Quechua, Haitian Kreyól, Nahuatl or Mixtec): demonstrated language ability through elementary.
No advanced language elective can be used to satisfy the 5 required courses for the minor. Advanced Language Electives include conversation, translation and creative writing courses. No course that counts toward another major or minor may be applied to the minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
AP Credit
4 or 5 in Spanish Language: language requirement fulfilled; credit for Intermediate Spanish, SPAN-UA 4. Enroll in Advanced Spanish (SPAN-UA 50) or Advance Spanish for Spanish Speaking Students (SPAN-UA 51.
