Students will choose two romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Italian). Primary language requires 5 courses; secondary language requires four courses to satisfy the major. Students must meet with the corresponding department DUS for advisement.
Requirements in Spanish:
LANGUAGE PREREQUISITE (1 course)
SPAN-UA 50 “Advanced Grammar and Composition”
OR
SPAN-UA 51 “Advanced Spanish for Spanish Speaking Students”.
This course does not count as one of the courses towards the major. Students who begin their coursework at a higher level than SPAN-UA 50 or 51 do not need to take an additional course.
REQUIREMENTS (1 required course plus either 3 or 4 electives):
One SPAN-UA 300 level course.
Advanced Language Electives:
Students have the option of choosing and counting ONE advanced language elective in the area of conversation, translation or creative writing. (Spanish Speaking Students cannot take the conversation course SPAN-UA 101 or 102).
See Department website for up to date course offerings and course descriptions.
Romance Language majors may not count any course taught in English toward the major.
Double majors may double count one relevant course with their other major with the permission of the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Spanish and Portuguese.
Honors Program
Students with a general and major GPA of 3.65 or above are encouraged to participate in the Honors Program. Honors majors enroll in a year-long (8-point) colloquium in the senior year, the Honors Thesis Seminar (4 of these points count toward the major.) The honors thesis is an extended research paper on a topic of the student’s choice and directed by a faculty adviser, written in Spanish or English. Students offer an oral presentation of the thesis in the spring of senior year.
