Title: “Beyond War, Beyond Weber: State-Building in the Contemporary World”
Abstract: In this talk Prasad uses the case of Somaliland to interrogate sociological theories of state-building. Somaliland is a breakaway part of Somalia that for 30 years has maintained a stable, peaceful democracy with elections that outside observers call free and fair, despite per capita GDP rates among the lowest in the world. Classical theories of state-building based on historical models from Europe need to be reformulated in some crucial respects to be able to explain state-building in the contemporary world.
