Course Description: This seminar will combine a survey of sociological work on religion, including such topics as the nature of the sacred, the impact of religion on economic and political institutions, the secularization debate, and lived religion, with a focus on the role of religion in the contemporary U.S., including the rise of superchurches and the decline of denominations (including the growth of spiritualism and the religiously unaffiliated), immigration and religious diversity, the increasingly strong relationship between religion and politics, and the complex relationship between religion and science. Open to doctoral students at NYU and any of the consortium institutions. The seminar is not open to masters students.
