To mark the launch of the Virtual Asian American Art Museum, we present “Artists in New York,” a two-panel symposium, highlighting Asian American artists who lived and worked in New York during the twentieth century. The panels, “An Asian American Modern in New York” and “Postwar Asian Diasporic Artists in New York,” will explore how New York served as an important local and transnational hub for artists like Fluxus, Yayoi Kusama, Zarina Hashmi, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Roger Shimomura, Martin Wong, Tseng Kwong Chi, and Epoxy Art Group. Featuring Anne Collins Goodyear (Bowdoin College), Mark Johnson (San Francisco State University), Margo Machida (Emerita, University of Connecticut, Storrs), Sadia Shirazi (Cornell University), John Tain (Asia Art Archive), ShiPu Wang (University of California, Merced), Tom Wolf (Bard College), Midori Yamamura (Hunter College, CUNY), and Midori Yoshimoto (New Jersey City University).
