It is often remarked that death is the only certainty of life, yet there remains much to say about how death is understood beyond its biological fact. This course surveys concepts of death and the afterlife in the Bible and ancient Jewish sources. Potential topics include: necromancy (communicating with the dead), sacrifice, burial, care for the dead, judgement of the soul, martyrdom, and resurrection. Throughout, we will also consider some of the earliest literary reflections of heaven, hell, and the End of Time and contextualize the development of these ideas within their historical and cultural contexts.
