About New York University's Public Humanities Initiative in Doctoral Education
Diverse publics frame our scholarly endeavors and inform our teaching and research. Yet too often we in the academy stand separate from these publics. The GSAS Public Humanities PhD Initiative recognizes that as scholars we are fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue our intellectual passions -- and that with such opportunity comes responsibility to engage deeply with the broader publics in which we all play a part. The Initiative aims to influence education for all Humanities PhD students to better reflect this important network of public/academic involvement. Through courses, skills workshops, and working fellowships our students explore, study, and integrate modes of public engagement into their scholarship while acquiring high-level experience in the rapidly evolving employment landscape inside and outside the twenty-first century academy.
