Topics in Politics:

The course applies a global risk framework to explain a global legitimacy crisis that began in the 2010s. Is it a US-led world order in a post-Trump era – or who’s in charge? Is democracy still the best system – or is there a better system to replace it? Can globalization withstand the challenge of populism and automation? Are liberal values in decline amid rising hate? The effect of the pandemic and the climate crisis on this global legitimacy crisis are also explored. By the end of the course, students will have a more enlightened understanding of global affairs and how the 2020s may evolve.
